Exhibition Opportunity: Half the Sky: Intersections in Social Practice Art (China)

WCA's International Caucus has created a global opportunity in China for BOTH women artists and essayists for April 2014.

We are so very fortunate to offer Half the Sky: Intersections in Social Practice Art. This is an unprecedented, art-based cultural exchange for women artists and essayists in the US to exhibit and share their work with women artists in China at LuXun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang. Luxun Academy is one of the premier art academies in China.

We are also privileged to have amazing jurors:  Alma Ruiz, Senior Curator at Museum of Contemporary Art - Los Angeles, for the art and Terri Weissman, assistant professor of Art History at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, for the essays.

This is a big project!

It is both an exhibition and cultural exchange.
  • A small working delegation of WCA members will go to LuXun Academy to build community, enhance mutual understanding, share our artistic perspectives and techniques through art-based events that this delegation will lead. More information about the delegation can be found on our Half the Sky home page http://wcainternationalcaucus.weebly.com/half-the-sky-2014shenyang-china.html

  • As a whole, the project is social practice art and we will be doing a lot of documenting!

We really need your help!

1) We ask your assistance in sharing our Indiegogo campaign to people you know, through your social media and email contacts. The campaign is also now live and will run through September 14th. Please also share this far and wide. We encourage everyone to contribute as soon as possible. Here is the link to our campaign page  http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/466573/wdgi/3967541  And here is the short link  igg.me/at/WCA-China-Indiegogo

Where will the money go?
  • $6,000 is our minimum goal for this Indiegogo campaign! It will cover:
    • $1200 room and board for the full delegation (4 days/nights at the Academy)
    • $100 travel stipends for each delegate (15 delegates)
    • editing and printing of catalogs
    • printing of signage, posters and postcards
    • tech equipment (hard drives, computer tablet, converters, speakers)
    • baggage fees for tech equipment
    • art materials for interactive events
    • gifts for the Chinese artists and our hosts at LuXun Academy of Fine Arts

YWC Sandy Spring Museum Performances (June 24, Sandy Spring Museum)

PlumDragoness "Transit Tales"- A solo performance of multi-media, dance, poetry & live music with visual projections that takes the audience on an urban influenced journey with communal & alienating factors that contribute to moments of "public transportation.

Bonnie MacAllister: "What the Water Wore" is a multimedia piece featuring live performance, projected film, prerecorded audio, and a small amount of audience participation.  The piece describes the fundamental right to clean water, the threats faced globally in our challenged ecosystems, through the perspective of the water herself if she were a woman living a village with no well or access to this life source.

“Gertrude for Dinner” is a physical theatre piece about women’s relationship with consuming food. Inspiration for this work comes from a traditional and contemporary meme, the image of eating spaghetti while crying. At first this is strikingly hilarious, but deconstruction reveals an issue with roots that span centuries. This image has been in western art consciousness from its Italian Renaissance origins in situational comedies known as Commedia Dell’arte. Today it can be viewed on hard-to-avoid websites such as eatingandcrying.com. The goal of this work is to show the resource of food as a multi-layered energy source for all women.

Pussy Riot:
“Meanwhile, the girls, who are accused of involvement in our group are still continuing a hunger strike, now head of prison refuses to provide them with personal items, books and linens.[...]
But our team is not going to give up and stop their activities. The new song is already written. Now we are monitoring the situation and choose the right moment to speak, until all the forces we go to the arrested girls.[...]
We believe that every person is very ill in prison (or jail), regardless of their gender identity, the presence or absence of children. We are against the sexist approach to the Advocacy of political prisoners and ask for help all concerned to change the preventive measure to two people who find themselves behind bars now, regardless of their media fame, gender and whether they are mothers or not.[...]
Thanks to everyone who supports us and helps in the protection of prisoners in our business.
P.S. Beautiful pictures of the arrested girls are not going to give, they are worthy of attention and protection regardless of their appearance.
With warm greetings, Pussy Riot.”
